Looking to get to grips with a basic 16th note groove practice, maybe add a little variation to it like adding a double kick drum as 8th notes?
In the video lesson below, we start with a quick reminder of how to play and count 1/4 and then 8th note grooves.
If you want to practise these more, check out the videos here:
Then we look at a beginner 16th note groove played simply on the kick and hi-hat. This gives you really good practice co-ordinating the hands and feet; keeping a regular pulse, and counting.
We first use the 'cheating' way of counting by just using: 1 2 3 4, 1 2 34 , then move onto counting 'correctly': 1e&a, 2e&a etc.
This definitely takes practice and you should play this basic concept for a while before moving on to the next exercise where we also add the snare.
We then move on to add a couple of simple variations just to get you moving around the kit a little and building greater co-ordination.
Have a look at this video, pause to practise the skills you need to, then move on to the next step.
Don't feel you need to rush - make sure things are secure before adding in variations.
Really focus on making sure the hi-hat and the kick or snare are played exactly at the same time.
